Microsoft has deepened its partnership with solar cell manufacturer Qcells, a move aimed at securing new energy capacity to support the company's rapidly growing data center footprint across the United States. The expanded collaboration underscores how hyperscale cloud providers are increasingly turning to direct energy development as power demand from AI infrastructure surges.
Under the expanded agreement, Qcells will develop and build new-generation, flexible energy resources that can be delivered either directly to Microsoft or to the local utility serving the surrounding community. The deployments will operate under a "Bring Your Own Capacity" (BYOC) model, in which Microsoft funds the generation capacity required for its operations, ensuring that new data center demand is matched with corresponding new energy resources.
The companies are also exploring the development of virtual power plants (VPPs), which would aggregate thousands of residential and commercial batteries into a single flexible energy resource. According to the companies, these VPPs would be deployed during periods of peak demand, providing power to the grid when utilities need it most. Qcells said it will prioritize participation from income-qualified households, aiming to ensure that the economic benefits of AI infrastructure extend to the communities where it is built.
Microsoft will deploy its Fabric and Azure services to enable the secure coordination of the distributed energy resources (DERs) at scale, a technical layer that allows real-time management of thousands of distributed assets. The partnership reflects a broader industry trend in which data center operators are moving beyond traditional power purchase agreements to take a more active role in energy generation and grid stability.
"As AI transforms the economy, we have an opportunity to rethink how the energy infrastructure supporting it is built," said Andy Park, global CEO of Qcells. "Our relationship with Microsoft began with American-made solar manufacturing and construction. Now we're exploring how we can build the energy capacity needed for AI while creating lasting value for the communities that share the grid."
The expanded collaboration builds on a relationship that began in 2023, when Microsoft contracted 2.5GW of solar modules from Qcells alongside engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) services. In 2024, the companies expanded that alliance to 12GW, which was the largest solar supply and EPC agreement to date in the market.
Qcells is the largest silicon-based solar manufacturer in the US market. Founded in Germany, the company now operates out of South Korea and maintains a global manufacturing network spanning the US, Malaysia, and South Korea. The partnership highlights how the intersection of AI infrastructure, clean energy procurement, and grid modernization is reshaping the way power is sourced and delivered for large-scale computing operations.
