Koch Inc. Weighs Sale of Data Center Developer Edged in Deal Valued at Over $15 Billion

By: IDCNOVARegion: North America
Koch Inc., the diversified conglomerate, is exploring a sale of Edged, a data center developer it co-founded, in a transaction that could exceed $15 billion, according to a report from Bloomberg on Tuesday. The move comes as surging demand for computing power from major technology companies continues to fuel a boom in data center construction and attract large institutional investors.

Koch has retained Goldman Sachs Group Inc. to evaluate buyer interest and has already received multiple bids, though discussions are ongoing and no final agreement has been reached, the report said. Edged was established by Koch alongside entrepreneur Jakob Carnemark to develop, build and operate data centers using a proprietary waterless cooling system. The company currently operates seven data centers, including a 169-megawatt facility in Atlanta, with additional projects in development.

The potential sale reflects the broader acceleration in data center investment worldwide. Large institutional investors have increasingly moved to fund such infrastructure as cloud providers and AI firms compete for capacity. BlackRock Inc., for instance, has partnered with Meta Platforms Inc. on a 1-gigawatt data center project in Texas that carries roughly $14 billion in development costs. KKR & Co. recently secured more than $10 billion to create a dedicated company for designing, building and operating AI infrastructure. Blackstone Inc. also filed for an initial public offering of a new data center acquisition vehicle earlier this year.

If completed, the sale of Edged would be one of the largest data center transactions in recent years, underscoring the value of next-generation facilities that prioritize energy efficiency and sustainability. The waterless cooling technology developed by Edged could be a key differentiator as operators face increasing regulatory and environmental pressure to reduce water usage in high-heat data center environments. Industry analysts expect continued consolidation and mega-deals in the sector as capital floods into AI-ready infrastructure.
