IonQ to Deploy First Quantum Computer at Nvidia's Accelerated Quantum Research Center in Boston

By: IDCNOVARegion: North America
IonQ is set to become the first company to install an on-premises quantum computer at Nvidia's Accelerated Quantum Research Center (NVAQC) in Boston, marking a significant step toward the convergence of quantum computing and AI infrastructure. The deployment, slated for 2027, will place IonQ's Superion 256 system directly alongside one of Nvidia's most advanced AI supercomputing platforms.

The Superion 256, first launched in September 2026, is IonQ's sixth-generation quantum computer and the first system to contain a fully integrated 256-qubit quantum processing unit fabricated by SkyWater, the chipmaker IonQ acquired for $1.8 billion in January 2026. Once deployed at NVAQC, the system will be linked with an Nvidia GB200 NVL72 system via Nvidia's NVQLink networking technology, with workloads orchestrated on the Nvidia CUDA-Q platform.

The installation will support a joint research program between IonQ and Nvidia focused on hybrid software development and large-scale system prototyping, quantum algorithms for portfolio optimization and risk modeling in financial services, materials science, and computational chemistry for drug discovery.

"Deploying our Superion 256 into cutting-edge environments, such as Nvidia's NVAQC, will lead to developments allowing our partners to benefit from our scalable architecture and robust manufacturability," said Niccolo de Masi, IonQ chairman and CEO. "We see this as the beginning of an exciting era of hybrid quantum-classical computing. This era will be unlocked by multiple generations of Superion systems and Nvidia's industry-leading AI platforms."

Timothy Costa, vice president and general manager for quantum at Nvidia, framed the collaboration as part of a broader industry trajectory. "Every supercomputer will become a quantum supercomputer," he said. "As the first quantum processor to sit alongside the NVAQC's GB200 NVL72 system, IonQ's Superion 256 will help make breakthroughs allowing the global ecosystem to integrate QPUs with AI infrastructure, build using open models and open-source software, and advance toward scientifically useful quantum supercomputers."

The deployment underscores a growing industry trend of integrating quantum processing units with classical AI infrastructure, a convergence that promises to accelerate research in fields ranging from drug discovery to financial modeling. For IonQ, which was founded in 2015 and develops quantum systems using trapped ion technology, the NVAQC installation represents a high-profile validation of its manufacturing strategy following the SkyWater acquisition. The company raised $2 billion through an equity offering in October 2025 via the sale of 16.5 million shares at $93 each to an entity managed by Heights Capital Management, and Amazon disclosed a $36.7 million stake in the company two months prior.
