Intel files patent continuation for multi-orbit space data center architecture

Chip giant Intel is signaling continued interest in orbital data centers, having filed a continuation application for a space-based computing architecture that has been in the works for more than four years. The application, published August 6, extends a patent family originally seeded with a provisional filing in February 2022, according to patent analysis platform Patentlyze.

The proposed system describes a two-tier orbital network in which large numbers of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites are coordinated by a smaller set of more powerful platforms positioned in higher orbits. Those higher-altitude nodes would perform edge compute functions on behalf of the LEO constellation below, reducing the need for constant communication with ground-based infrastructure.

“LEO satellites need to be simple to reduce costs, especially since battery and thruster life is low because of many orbital adjustments caused by Earth's gravitational pull and solar storm damage,” reads an Intel patent filed February 17, 2023, and published February 3, 2026. “These limited satellite capabilities require routing that is computed by other, more capable compute nodes (eg, on-Earth). Thus, the following approaches include the use of higher-than-LEO orbit satellite constellations—having more processing power—to offload and handle some of the Earth-based processing.”

The patent family proposes automating satellite fleet management from orbital data centers, a task traditionally performed by teams of engineers and space scientists in specialized control rooms on the ground. The company argues that some of the calculations these experts perform could be handled faster in orbit, though significant questions remain about latency and the software's ability to operate without human oversight.

“Missing this timeline risks misreading a four-year-old design concept as a new business plan,” said Y. Kobayashi at Xenospectrum, commenting on the significance of the continuation filing.

The applications do not specify which orbital plane would host the command and compute layer, listing the radiation-heavy medium Earth orbit (MEO), geostationary orbit, and high Earth orbit (HEO) as options, any of which “may be used to provide network and data processing operations for a LEO constellation.”

Intel has not publicly commented on the filings, and the technologies described remain under patent review. As competing hyperscalers accelerate efforts to deploy orbital infrastructure, Intel's continued pursuit of this intellectual property suggests the company is keeping its options open in a sector that could redefine how edge computing is delivered at global scale.
