Innio secures 1.1GW gas engine order from US data center developer

German engine manufacturer Innio has secured an order to supply approximately 1.1GW of gas engine capacity to an unnamed developer and operator of large-scale data center campuses in the US market. The deal, booked in the second quarter, ranks among the largest in the company's history, underscoring the escalating demand for dedicated on-site power in the AI-driven data center boom.

The Munich-based company said more than 200 Innio Jenbacher J624 engines are expected to be deployed, providing behind-the-meter prime power generation across multiple US sites. Deliveries are scheduled in phases, with the customer's identity withheld for confidentiality reasons. The J624, Innio's high-speed gas engine tailored for data center operators, offers containerized and fast-deployment configurations designed to handle demanding AI load profiles, with each unit delivering 4.5MW of capacity.

The order reflects a broader industry shift toward behind-the-meter generation as data center operators seek to bypass grid constraints and secure reliable power for hyperscale AI workloads. Innio has increasingly focused on this market over the past year. Earlier in 2026, the company completed a backup power demonstration for data centers using 100 percent hydrogen-fueled gas engines, partnered with the Net Zero Innovation Hub for Data Centers. That test, conducted at Innio's research facilities in Jenbach, Austria, and Fredericia, Denmark, validated that clean hydrogen engines can handle heavy data center demands.

The latest deal signals growing confidence in gas engines as a near-term solution for speed-to-power challenges, while also positioning Innio to capture further momentum as US data center development accelerates. The phased delivery schedule suggests a multi-year rollout, potentially strengthening Innio's revenue visibility and reinforcing the role of distributed generation in the energy transition.
