Hyosung Launches 30MW STT Seoul 1 Data Center, Targets AI Infrastructure Growth

Hyosung Corporation has officially launched STT Seoul 1, a 30MW hyperscale data center in the heart of Seoul, marking the South Korean conglomerate's strategic entry into the AI data center market under the direction of Chairman Cho Hyun-Joon.

The facility, developed through a joint venture between Hyosung and Singapore-headquartered STT GDC, is designed to serve the growing demand for cloud and AI workloads in a market projected to reach KRW 20 trillion by 2030. STT GDC operates more than 100 data centers across 12 countries in Asia and Europe, with approximately 2.3GW of IT capacity.

STT Seoul 1 integrates Hyosung Heavy Industries' advanced power solutions—including ultra-high-voltage transformers and circuit breakers—with STT GDC's global standards in design, operation, and services. A key differentiator of the facility is its ability to deliver up to 30MW of IT capacity within Seoul's urban core, where securing power is notoriously difficult. As energy regulations and grid constraints push major data centers to the outskirts or regional areas, this prime location minimizes data transmission latency by remaining close to major business hubs.

The facility has achieved the Tier III Certification of Design Documents from the Uptime Institute, ensuring continuous server operations and high service continuity even during equipment maintenance or system failures. It also adheres to stringent global security standards to manage potential threats including external intrusions and natural disasters.

"I have long been convinced that data will become the 'oil of the 21st century,'" said Chairman Cho Hyun-Joon during the opening ceremony. "Foreseeing an era where AI competitiveness equates to national competitiveness, we set out to build a data center that will serve as the heart of AI."

Cho further emphasized that STT Seoul 1 represents "the culmination of STT GDC's expertise and Hyosung's power solution capabilities," adding that it "will stand as a core infrastructure supporting the growth of South Korea's AI industry and a new milestone in strengthening future competitiveness."

The chairman has directed Hyosung to concentrate its core capabilities on the AI data center business, leveraging synergies across affiliates. Hyosung Heavy Industries will apply its power equipment capabilities and energy-efficiency technologies to enhance operational stability and power efficiency, while also building specialized construction expertise for AI data centers based on its experience in liquefaction plants and hydrogen refueling stations. Hyosung ITX will contribute its IT business expertise spanning cloud services, content delivery networks, and digital transformation solutions to implement traffic optimization and security management systems.

"Hyosung is a company equipped with the technological prowess of a top-tier global power equipment manufacturer, robust construction capabilities, and nearly 30 years of accumulated IT operational experience," Cho stated. "The AI data center business is the crystallization of Hyosung's core competencies and must be developed into the group's future growth axis."

In the United States, the world's largest power market, Hyosung Heavy Industries has maintained leadership in the 765kV ultra-high-voltage transformer segment since the early 2010s and currently supplies nearly half of the 765kV ultra-high-voltage transformers installed across the U.S. power grid, positioning the company as a pivotal player in supporting power infrastructure for the AI era.
