Hitachi Energy and Ansaldo Energia Sign MoU to Develop Integrated Power Solutions for Data Centers and Grid

By: IDCNOVARegion: North America
Hitachi Energy has signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding with Italian energy firm Ansaldo Energia to jointly develop integrated power solutions capable of serving both 60Hz and 50Hz markets, with data centers positioned as a key deployment target. The agreement brings together Ansaldo Energia's gas-turbine and generator technologies with Hitachi Energy's expertise in full grid system integration, creating an end-to-end offering that spans power generation through transmission to the point of consumption.

The partnership arrives as electricity demand surges at a pace not seen in decades, driven in large part by the rapid expansion of data center capacity worldwide. As power requirements continue to outpace available infrastructure, the need for scalable, rapidly deployable energy solutions has become increasingly urgent. Andreas Schierenbeck, CEO of Hitachi Energy, framed the collaboration in these terms: "Power demand is growing at a pace we have not seen for decades as the world enters the electricity era. As power demand continues to outpace available infrastructure, the need for scalable, rapidly deployable power solutions has become increasingly urgent. By combining our complementary strengths with Ansaldo Energia, we help customers unlock new capacity, accelerate time to power, and build resilient energy systems that support economic growth and digital innovation."

Under the intended scope of the agreement, the two companies plan to develop an end-to-end solution for a range of applications, integrating power generation with the full power transmission system through to the point of consumption. Target deployments include energy hubs, data centers, and other large-scale electricity consumers. Hitachi said the partnership will also support the autonomous, integrated operation of data centers through One Hitachi by combining its end-to-end power solutions with HMAX Data Center, a domain-specific solution suite that integrates monitoring and correlation analysis across multi-vendor power, IT, and cooling infrastructure.

Fabrizio Fabbri, CEO of Ansaldo Energia, emphasized the need for broader cooperation across the energy value chain: "Meeting the world's growing demand for electricity requires closer collaboration across the entire energy value chain. By combining Ansaldo Energia's power generation technologies with Hitachi Energy's expertise in grid infrastructure, we will provide integrated solutions that accelerate deployment and deliver the scale, flexibility and reliability required by the next generation of industrial, digital and energy infrastructure."

The MoU builds on Hitachi Energy's broader push to expand grid infrastructure in response to surging data center capacity. In September, the company announced a $1 billion investment to scale up its grid infrastructure manufacturing footprint in the United States, with nearly half of the sum earmarked for a new power transformer manufacturing facility in South Boston, Virginia. Earlier, in June of last year, Hitachi Energy partnered with regional transmission operator Southwest Power Pool to develop an Nvidia-powered artificial intelligence solution aimed at reducing the duration of interconnection impact studies.

Hitachi Energy is the energy manufacturing arm of Japanese multinational conglomerate Hitachi, with a product portfolio that includes high-voltage equipment, transformers, and services for the renewable energy sector. Ansaldo Energia, headquartered in Genoa, Italy, develops gas turbines, steam turbines, and generators for a range of industrial applications. The collaboration underscores a growing trend of convergence between power generation and grid infrastructure providers as the data center industry seeks faster routes to reliable, large-scale electricity supply.
