Heartland Oil Plans 7MW Bitcoin Mine at Saskatchewan Gas Plant

By: IDCNOVARegion: North America
Heartland Oil is proposing to develop a 7MW Bitcoin mining operation at an existing natural gas processing plant in Beaver River, Saskatchewan, in a move that would see the privately held energy company convert otherwise captive gas resources into computing capacity while diversifying revenue at a facility that has been in operation since 1990. The project, undertaken in partnership with Calgary-based electricity consultancy Orion Power Solutions, would install mining equipment within the existing footprint of the gas plant, according to a notice published by the municipality.

Under the proposal, generators at the site would run on gas sourced from the companies' own wells, eliminating reliance on SaskEnergy's local supplies, and the mining operation would operate independently of the SaskPower electricity grid. The companies said the mining computers would require no water supply and that no farmland would need to be converted for the project. Noise testing is planned to assess and address potential community impacts, and an open house was advertised for October 15 at the Senior Citizens' Hall in Pierceland.

The partners said the project would diversify the plant's revenue streams and support its long-term viability while providing construction and maintenance work in the region. Heartland describes itself as a natural gas-focused energy company operating in Saskatchewan, with its website listing 76 producing wells, three sales compressor stations and 450km of pipelines, and noting a 100 percent working interest in its wells and infrastructure. Orion provides electricity consulting and services covering power supply, generating equipment, electrical interconnection, and data center setup, operations and maintenance.

The notice did not disclose a construction timetable, capital cost or hardware specifications, and did not confirm whether regulatory approvals have been secured. The proposal reflects a growing trend among energy producers to pair stranded or on-site gas supplies with Bitcoin mining as a means of monetizing resources without relying on grid interconnection, which has become increasingly constrained across North America. Saskatchewan has emerged as a notable jurisdiction for such projects, with Bell Canada and the Government of Saskatchewan announcing in September a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding for the phased expansion of up to 900MW of additional capacity at a planned data center — a site the province said would represent the largest capital investment in its history, with potential capital investment exceeding $50 billion.
