“Green recognized early on the importance of data centers for the country’s digital development and has played a lasting role in shaping the industry. With the campus in Birr, we are continuing this pioneering work,” said Roger Süess, CEO of Green, in a statement. “We are pleased to carry out this project in a region with which Green has been closely connected for many years. Together with the municipality and the canton, we want to develop the site for the future and create added value for the region.”
The campus will be built in phases, according to Green, which also plans to siphon waste heat from the facility's servers into nearby district heating networks. Computing infrastructure is likely to be cooled using a closed-loop system, minimizing the data center's annual water consumption. The site will additionally include space for industrial and commercial facilities as well as parkland open to the general public.
Green said the Birr development would contribute toward strengthening Switzerland's digital sovereignty and make high-performance compute more accessible to the country's businesses and public organizations. Founded in 1995 and headquartered in Lupfig, also in the canton of Aargau, Green operates seven data centers in Switzerland. In September 2025, the company entered the German market by establishing a subsidiary, Green Datacenter Germany GmbH, and assessing several potential sites for new data center developments outside Frankfurt. The Birr project would help expand a modest Swiss data center market, with only two facilities listed in the canton by DataCenterMap and three run by Green itself in Lupfig.
