Fire Breaks Out at Meta Data Center Construction Site in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin

A fire erupted at a Meta data center construction site in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, on July 19, prompting a swift response from local emergency services. The incident highlights the inherent risks of large-scale infrastructure projects, even during non-active construction periods.

The Beaver Dam Fire Department was dispatched to the site at 5:37 p.m. after receiving a report of black smoke emanating from the roof of a building. In a Facebook post, the department detailed that based on information from on-site security and the structure's size, a MABAS Working Still Alarm was requested to ensure adequate resources. Upon arrival, firefighters located a small fire involving a pile of discarded roofing materials. Crews quickly deployed a 1¾-inch handline to the roof and extinguished the blaze within minutes.

The fire was contained entirely to the discarded roofing materials, preventing any spread. Minimal damage was reported, limited to a small area of the roof. No construction activity was taking place at the time of the incident, and there were no injuries to civilians or emergency responders. DCD has contacted Meta for comment.

Meta announced plans for the data center campus in November 2025, committing a $1 billion investment. The project is expected to span 700,000 sq ft (65,032 sqm) in Beaver Dam, a city in Dodge County located about 65 miles northwest of Milwaukee. The incident serves as a reminder of the safety protocols required at massive construction sites, where even small fires can escalate quickly without proper oversight.
