Blue Origin begins deployment of Quartz ground station network with RBC Signals

Blue Origin, the space company owned by Jeff Bezos, has announced the successful testing of its first three satellite ground stations installed under its Quartz ground network in Bermuda, New Zealand, and Australia. The rollout marks the initial phase of a broader initiative aimed at addressing long-standing connectivity gaps in the satellite sector, particularly for government and defense missions.

The Quartz network is being deployed in phases, with a target of nine operational sites by the end of this year. Each site is purpose-built to enhance ground communications infrastructure, which industry experts have long identified as one of the most fragmented and costly components of space operations. The network is designed to serve national security programs as well as civil and commercial operators, offering an integrated alternative to traditional, piecemeal ground station arrangements.

Tory Bruno, president of National Security at Blue Origin, emphasized the strategic importance of the network in a statement. "Ground communications infrastructure has historically been one of the most fragmented and costly elements of space operations, for national security programs, civil, and commercial operators alike," he said. "With Quartz, we've built a single, fully integrated network that changes that equation. One interface, one operations team, transparent pricing, and a security architecture built to meet the most demanding mission requirements."

The 2026 phase of the Quartz rollout, first announced in April, involves the deployment of 3.7-meter aperture antennas operating in S-band and X-band frequencies for low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites. These systems are supported by radiometric tracking, signal intelligence, and space domain awareness capabilities. The network will initially support Blue Origin's planned TerraWave satellite constellation, which is being developed independently of Amazon's Project Kuiper, now known as Amazon Leo.

Bruno, who leads Blue Origin's Blue National Security Group and previously held senior roles at Lockheed Martin, has prioritized precision and security in mission operations. Under his leadership, the company secured $2.4 billion in launch contracts under the U.S. Space Force's National Security Space Launch Phase 3 Lane 2 contract in 2025. His focus on defense-grade infrastructure differentiates Quartz and TerraWave from more commercially oriented offerings such as Amazon Leo.

Later this year, Blue Origin expects to begin installing 9-meter aperture antennas supporting L-, S-, X-, and Ka-band frequencies. These larger systems will provide mission data, telemetry, tracking, and command (TT&C) services for satellites in geostationary transfer orbit (GTO), geostationary orbit (GEO), cislunar trajectories, and beyond.

Blue Origin is partnering with RBC Signals, a ground station operator and dynamic spectrum leaser, to support site surveys, antenna procurement and deployment, and network hosting. The collaboration is part of a long-term strategy to verticalize Blue Origin's space communications offering. RBC Signals CEO Ron Faith highlighted the partnership in a statement: "Our mission is to provide reliable, flexible, and innovative communications solutions for the world's most ambitious space operators. Blue Origin's vision for the future of space exploration aligns perfectly with our capabilities, and we look forward to supporting their missions with a resilient and globally integrated communications network."

Founded in 2015, RBC Signals provides satellite communications and monitoring across VHF, UHF, L, S, C, X, Ku, Ka, and optical bands, leveraging a network of more than 50 company-owned and partner-owned sites worldwide.

Blue Origin's TerraWave constellation could eventually expand to more than 5,400 satellites in low and medium Earth orbits, with additional plans for an orbital data center project potentially spanning tens of thousands of satellites. In contrast, Amazon Leo—formerly Project Kuiper—has announced aspirations to install more than 300 ground stations to support its 3,232-satellite constellation. Amazon also completed the acquisition of satellite operator Globalstar for $11.57 billion in April this year.

The Quartz network represents a significant step in Blue Origin's efforts to establish a foothold in the satellite ground infrastructure market, a segment that has seen growing demand from both government and commercial customers. By integrating ground station services with its broader space capabilities, Blue Origin is positioning itself as a vertically integrated player in the evolving space economy, with potential implications for data center connectivity, remote sensing, and global communications.
