Axelera AI Unveils New Product Naming Framework for Edge AI Chip Portfolio

By: IDCNOVARegion: Europe
Axelera AI, a Netherlands-based startup specializing in edge artificial intelligence processing units, has announced a comprehensive overhaul of its product naming structure. The company said the move is designed to align its entire hardware portfolio under the Axelera master brand, with each chip now identified by its specific optimization purpose.

The new framework, detailed in a company statement, introduces three distinct product categories: Axelera Embedded, Axelera Edge, and Axelera Server. Each product name will include a series of numbers and letters that denote generation, optimization type, relative performance, and form factor. For instance, the company's first-generation Metis Compute Board will now be referred to as Axelera Embedded 111c, while the Metis PCIe (1-chip) has been rebranded as Axelera Edge 130p.

According to the company, the naming convention follows a structured logic: the first number indicates the silicon generation—1 for Metis, 2 for the upcoming Europa, and 3 for the forthcoming Titania chip. A second number specifies the optimization descriptor, while a third digit differentiates relative performance levels. A trailing lowercase letter denotes the hardware's form factor.

"Going forward, every product carries the Axelera master brand, followed by an optimization descriptor and a short number," the company explained in its announcement. Axelera was quick to emphasize that this is purely a naming update rather than a product change. "The new naming convention does not impact the silicon, products, or software tools built on the company's Metis architecture, which is already in-market and used by hundreds of customers," the firm stated.

Founded in 2021, Axelera AI develops AI processing units (AIPUs) designed to run artificial intelligence workloads at the network edge, rather than within centralized data centers. Built on RISC-V and D-IMC architecture, the company's technology aims to accelerate both AI inference and data processing by reducing latency associated with cloud-based computing. Since its inception, Axelera has raised $450 million in capital from investors including BlackRock, Bitfury, the European Investment Council Fund, and the Samsung Catalyst Fund.

The rebranding comes at a time when the edge AI market is becoming increasingly competitive, with major semiconductor players and startups alike vying for a share of the growing demand for on-device intelligence. By standardizing its product nomenclature, Axelera aims to simplify customer decision-making and strengthen brand recognition across its embedded, edge, and server-level offerings. Industry observers note that clear product differentiation is critical as edge AI hardware evolves from niche deployments to mainstream adoption across sectors such as automotive, industrial automation, and smart infrastructure.
