Armada Deploys Containerized Data Center at North Dakota Air Force Base

Edge infrastructure company Armada has deployed one of its modular data centers at GrandSky, a drone-focused operations center located on the Grand Forks Air Force Base in North Dakota. The deployment marks a milestone in bringing high-performance edge computing to military and aerospace testing environments.

The company installed a 40-foot (12.1-meter) Triton containerized data center, which offers five racks of compute capacity within a ruggedized, turnkey enclosure. The unit is part of Armada’s Galleon product line, which includes portable and modular data centers designed for deployment in remote or demanding environments.

According to GrandSky, the facility enables customers to process sensor and aircraft data locally, deploy artificial intelligence and machine learning applications, and generate real-time insights while transmitting only mission-critical data back to the cloud. “For GrandSky, Triton connects aircraft, sensors, communications, compute, and mission data within one operational environment,” the organization said. “Customers can come here not only to fly and evaluate systems, but also to process data, run AI applications, integrate technologies, and demonstrate complete mission workflows under real-world conditions.”

The launch event was attended by U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer (Republican, North Dakota). GrandSky, established in 2015 on the grounds of the Grand Forks Air Force Base, is the first commercial Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Flight Operations Center, research and development park, and UAS testing site in the United States. Separately, EdgeData LLC, based in Grand Forks, has signed a letter of intent to build a 16,000-square-foot, 1MW data center at GrandSky in 2026 to provide data storage for tenants at the park.

Armada co-founder and COO Jon Runyan emphasized the strategic importance of the deployment. “The AI race isn’t even a once-in-a-generation race, it’s a once-in-forever race. To win, we have to build and deploy AI infrastructure ahead of demand. That’s why today we brought Triton, our 40-foot Galleon, to GrandSKY, at Grand Forks, North Dakota,” he said. Armada has previously deployed or plans to deploy modules with organizations including Nscale, UnityCloud, TampNet, Aramco, Newlab, Eclipse, the U.S. Navy, and Alaska’s Department of Transportation & Public Facilities. Investors in Armada include Microsoft, BlackRock, and Johnson Controls.
