1414 Degrees Signs Landmark Deal for Up to 1GW AI Campus at Aurora Energy Precinct in South Australia

Australian thermal energy storage company 1414 Degrees has taken a significant step toward establishing one of the country's largest AI-focused data center developments by signing a non-binding heads of agreement with an unnamed data center developer. The agreement paves the way for a phased, gigawatt-scale AI campus within the Aurora Energy Precinct near Port Augusta in South Australia, marking a major milestone for the region's renewable energy-driven industrial strategy.

Under the terms of the deal, the project will be developed in phases, beginning with a 17MW campus powered through the company's existing 33kV network connection. This initial stage will be supplemented by on-site solar generation and a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), ensuring the facility operates on clean energy from the outset. Following the successful deployment of the anchor campus, the partners intend to expand to a 200MW facility after upgrading a 275kV transmission connection on the eastern side of the site. This infrastructure enhancement is expected to unlock a longer-term pathway toward gigawatt-scale deployment, with the entire Aurora Precinct landholding spanning 1,580 hectares.

The agreement grants the unnamed operator exclusivity over an initial 40-hectare development parcel while 1414 Degrees negotiates definitive commercial agreements. This arrangement allows both parties to move forward with planning and design work while finalizing the legal and financial framework for the project. Executive chairman Kevin Moriarty emphasized the strategic significance of the deal, stating that it "validates Aurora's strategy of attracting energy-intensive industries to a site purpose-built for renewable generation, storage and grid connectivity." He added that the existing 33kV connection allows the company to "start generating value from part of the precinct now, while the 275kV build-out and Aurora's solar and battery storage development continue in parallel."

The Aurora site is designed as a renewable-anchored energy park with the potential for up to 900MW of solar generation and an approved 140MW/280MWh BESS. This combination of solar capacity and energy storage positions the precinct as a self-sufficient power hub capable of supporting high-density computing loads around the clock. The phased approach also mitigates the risks typically associated with large-scale infrastructure projects, allowing the developers to validate technology, grid integration, and operational performance before committing to full-scale expansion.

1414 Degrees, headquartered in Adelaide, South Australia, specializes in silicon-based thermal and battery technologies, including its proprietary SiBox, SiBrick, and SiNTL platforms. The company's expertise in energy storage will likely play a critical role in ensuring the AI campus maintains stable power supply despite the intermittent nature of solar generation. Industry observers note that the project reflects a broader trend of data center developers seeking locations with direct access to renewable energy and robust grid infrastructure, particularly as AI workloads drive unprecedented demand for electricity.

The development also underscores the growing importance of regional energy precincts in Australia's digital economy strategy. By co-locating renewable generation, storage, and high-energy users, projects like Aurora can reduce transmission losses, lower costs, and accelerate the transition to sustainable computing.
