KEY TAKEAWAYS

The Chengdu-Chongqing combined IDC market hit RMB 3.78 billion in 2020 with a 21.2% year-on-year increase. Chengdu reached RMB 2.33 billion and Chongqing hit RMB 1.45 billion, driven by internet, finance and cloud enterprises gathering in the western core urban cluster.

Internet businesses dominate regional demand, accounting for 58.7% in Chengdu and 61.6% in Chongqing. The proportion of manufacturing and financial industry demand is higher compared with first-tier eastern cities, benefited from industrial transfer to western China.

Chengdu and Chongqing rolled out targeted subsidies on land, electricity and broadband for data center projects, effectively cutting operational costs and attracting more new computing infrastructure to the two cities in the coming years.

By 2020, operational racks stood at 21,000 in Chengdu and 27,000 in Chongqing. Chengdu’s vacancy rate was 19.8% versus Chongqing’s 21.5%, as Chongqing’s existing inventory takes longer to be fully absorbed.

A large number of planned data center projects are pending construction across the region. Total cabinet stock is projected to reach 89,000 by 2022, and the aggregate regional IDC market size will grow to RMB 7.24 billion, with Chengdu at RMB 4.42 billion and Chongqing at RMB 2.82 billion.
