KEY TAKEAWAYS
Beijing’s IDC market size hit RMB 269.8 billion in 2020, up 19.9% year-on-year, accounting for 27.1% of China’s total and ranking first nationwide. The market will maintain over 15% annual growth through 2023 and reach RMB 418.6 billion, with port business gaining higher contribution as rack growth slows.
Third-party vendors captured over 50% market share in 2020, with top players like GDS and 21Vianet holding obvious leading positions; their self-built racks exceed 70% of total third-party capacity, surpassing telecom operators.
Over 80% of new racks in the next three years will be deployed in Beijing’s suburbs and surrounding cities including Zhangjiakou and Langfang. Zhangjiakou stands out for abundant green power resources under the dual-carbon strategy.
Internet and cloud companies form the core demand source. Internet firms generated over 30,000 racks of demand in 2020, while major cloud vendors each require more than 10,000 racks, with demand expected to grow by around 30% annually.
By end-2020, total racks across Beijing and its peripherals reached 395,000 (300,000 in Beijing, 95,000 in surrounding regions). Total inventory will rise to 565,000 by 2023, with incremental capacity mainly from peripheral zones.
