Venture Global has entered into power and grid frame agreements with GE Vernova and Baker Hughes Energy Services covering up to 16 new 720 MW power island units and associated power transformer equipment, in a move that underscores the growing convergence of natural gas infrastructure and AI compute demand in the United States. The agreements are designed to support the continued expansion of the company's existing behind-the-meter, Island-Mode industrial power network, which operates independently of the public electric grid.
The deal positions Venture Global to make up to 10 GW of new compute capacity available over time at sites it owns or controls, creating a pathway for adjacent large-scale data centers. Because the Island-Mode power is generated using dedicated on-site infrastructure, the expansion would place no additional demand on the public electric grid or public water utilities, and would therefore impose no added costs on local consumers. The new capacity builds on the company's existing 4.5 GW of Island-Mode modular gas-fired generation that has supplied and will continue to supply power to its LNG facilities.
"Over the last decade, Venture Global has successfully built complex energy infrastructure, including one of the world's largest private industrial electric grids that supports our core LNG export business," said Venture Global CEO Mike Sabel. "Our power generation platform is not reliant on the grid and reliably runs completely behind-the-meter, making this new opportunity a natural extension of what we are experienced and proven to do safely, reliably, and at scale."
Sabel added that the agreements outline a phased, disciplined expansion to make reliable large-scale power capacity available for new compute as and when the company elects. "By providing Island-Mode power generation, gas supply, closed-loop water systems, thousands of acres of land, data centers, and other necessary infrastructure, Venture Global is creating a vertically integrated AI utility that could solve for the many chokepoints associated with the AI buildout," he said.
The company emphasized that it remains fully committed to its growing LNG business, customers, and existing contractual commitments. Any potential third-party development for Island-Mode power capacity would be separate from and complementary to Venture Global's existing LNG operations and would not impact its LNG sales agreements or other commercial commitments. The production and delivery of low-cost, clean American LNG for the next several decades remains a key strategic objective.
Under the framework, Venture Global may enter into definitive reservation agreements containing agreed pricing and delivery terms to reserve manufacturing capability over time, preserving flexibility on the timing and scope of future deployments. The company currently expects to place its first power island purchase order by the end of 2026. Additional capacity would be built in stages as customer commitments and other commercial arrangements are established. The 720 MW power island units would consist of combined cycle gas turbines and related equipment, using configurations consistent with Venture Global's existing power infrastructure.
Over the past 15 years, Venture Global has grown into one of the world's largest LNG producers and exporters, building one of the largest private and self-sufficient industrial power grids in the world with six power islands ordered, in construction, or operating across its LNG facilities. With the up to 16 additional power island units contemplated by the new agreements, the company expects to have the potential to continue supporting its growing LNG business while separately creating a substantial foundation for its AI utility. Subject to customer commitments, market demand, and other commercial considerations, Venture Global anticipates it will be able to develop up to 10 GW of compute capacity by the end of 2034.
The company said it will work with federal, state, and local regulators on any additional permitting requirements, and will file its first permit applications this week to begin the process. Venture Global is an American producer and exporter of low-cost U.S. liquefied natural gas with over 100 MTPA of capacity in production, construction, or development. Its first three projects — Calcasieu Pass, Plaquemines LNG, and CP2 LNG — are located in Louisiana along the Gulf of America, and the company is developing carbon capture and sequestration projects at each of its LNG facilities.
