Malaysian mobile operator U Mobile has entered a strategic collaboration with OpenAI to integrate artificial intelligence across its operations, marking OpenAI's first partnership with a telecommunications provider in Malaysia. The move underscores the growing adoption of AI within Southeast Asia's telecom sector as operators seek to modernize networks and enhance service delivery.
In a statement released on Wednesday, U Mobile said it will gain early access to OpenAI's latest models, which can be applied to areas including automating internal processes, software development, data analytics, network operations, cybersecurity, and digital content. The collaboration is designed to embed AI deeply into the company's operational fabric, positioning U Mobile as an AI-enabled telco in a competitive regional market.
The companies did not disclose the financial details of the collaboration. However, the scope of the partnership is broad, covering workforce AI skill-building, customer-facing application development, enterprise and partner innovation support, and cybersecurity enhancements. Amazon Web Services will provide cloud infrastructure and technical support to help develop and scale the applications.
As part of the arrangement, OpenAI will become an anchor partner of U Mobile's Enterprise Innovation Platform, a program that allows businesses, startups, developers, and universities to test and validate AI applications. U Mobile and OpenAI will jointly broaden access to AI-enabled products and services for both consumers and businesses, potentially accelerating AI adoption across Malaysia's digital economy.
Neil Tomkinson, CIO of U Mobile, said the company was embedding AI across its business to help employees work more efficiently and improve decision-making as it moves toward becoming an AI-enabled telco. Fred Groen, OpenAI's head of mid-market go-to-market for Asia Pacific, said the collaboration would focus on AI's support for U Mobile's workforce, customer experience, enterprise offerings, and cybersecurity.
The partnership comes as U Mobile, Malaysia's newest 5G network provider, continues to expand its infrastructure and service portfolio. By integrating AI at the core of its operations, the company aims to differentiate itself in a market where digital transformation is increasingly a competitive priority. Industry observers note that this collaboration could set a precedent for other regional telecom operators looking to leverage AI for operational efficiency and new revenue streams.
