Swedish data center firm EcoDataCenter has acquired land in central Sweden for a new campus, marking its third project in Dalarna County. The company announced this week that it has signed an agreement with Smedjebacken Municipality for the purchase of 52 hectares of land to build the facility, which could total 150MW with potential opportunity to expand further.
Construction is expected to begin as soon as building and environmental permits are finalized, anticipated in early 2027. Smedjebacken, a town and municipality in Dalarna County located some 200km west of Stockholm, has been in discussions with EcoDataCenter since a letter of intent was signed between the two parties in 2019. The new site follows the company's original campus in Falun and a second facility in Borlänge, deepening its footprint in the region.
"We have our roots in the region, and being able to continue to grow here is very important to us. We've had many productive discussions with Smedjebacken since 2019, and we are now taking the next step in this establishment," said Peter Michelson, CEO of EcoDataCenter. "Smedjebacken has been a strong partner throughout this process, and that partnership is what allows us to grow responsibly and reliably."
Fredrik Rönning, chair of the municipal executive board at Smedjebacken Municipality, emphasized the broader impact of the project. "This is a major step toward breaking ground. An establishment of this scale means a great deal for the local labor market. EcoDataCenter's high ambitions on sustainability were a decisive factor in the municipality's decision," he added.
The acquisition underscores EcoDataCenter's continued expansion in the Nordic region, where demand for data center capacity is being driven by the rapid growth of AI and cloud computing. The company, formed in 2015 as a joint venture between local energy company Falu Energi & Vatten and data center operator EcoDC AB, has evolved significantly over the past decade. Nordic real estate developer Areim took a majority stake in 2018 and merged the firm with Swedish operator Fortlax in 2019.
In April 2025, EcoDataCenter sold three facilities in Sweden to CapMan Infra as part of a strategic pivot toward hyperscale developments. Two of those data centers were located in Stockholm and one in Piteå. The company launched its first data center in Falun in 2019, with the site capable of reaching 80MW at full build-out. Ground was broken on the Borlänge site in September 2025, with its first phase due to launch in 2027 offering 250MW and potential to exceed 360MW.
EcoDataCenter's customer base includes Mistral AI, language AI company DeepL, and AI cloud firm CoreWeave, reflecting the company's focus on serving high-density computing workloads. The Dalarna expansion positions the firm to capture further demand from hyperscale and AI-driven clients, while reinforcing its commitment to sustainable data center operations in Sweden.
