Starcloud, a pioneering company focused on space-based data infrastructure, announced on Thursday that it has secured $250 million in a new funding round to accelerate the development of orbital data centers. The investment underscores a growing bet that space could become the next frontier for high-performance computing, particularly for AI workloads that demand vast amounts of power and cooling that terrestrial facilities struggle to provide.
The funding round was led by a consortium of existing and new investors, though the company did not disclose the full list of participants. Starcloud said the capital will be used to launch its first generation of orbital data center modules, which are designed to operate in low Earth orbit and be powered by solar energy. The company aims to deploy these units within the next three years, with initial contracts already signed with several undisclosed cloud and AI firms.
The concept of orbital data centers has gained traction in recent years as ground-based facilities face mounting challenges around land acquisition, energy costs, and cooling constraints. By moving compute infrastructure to space, companies like Starcloud argue they can tap into uninterrupted solar power and natural heat dissipation, potentially reducing operational costs while expanding global data accessibility.
