ReNew Wind Energy Pvt Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of clean energy company ReNew, has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Maharashtra government to develop an integrated green data centre park in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, representing a proposed investment of ₹70,000 crore. The project, which is planned to have a capacity of 750 megawatts, marks a significant step in ReNew's expansion into the data centre sector and underscores the growing convergence of renewable energy and digital infrastructure in India.

The proposed park will be developed across multiple locations, including Panvel, Khalapur, Taloja and Bhokharpada in Navi Mumbai and the broader MMR region. Operations are expected to commence in 2028. The MoU was signed by P Anbalagan, Principal Secretary of the Industries, Investment and Services Department and CEO of Invest Maharashtra, alongside ReNew's state head. Under the agreement, the state government will facilitate the project by assisting in obtaining necessary permissions, registrations, approvals, clearances and fiscal incentives in accordance with applicable policies and regulations.

A defining feature of the proposed park is its emphasis on green power for data centre operations. According to ReNew, the Integrated Green Data Center Park will be required to use 51 percent green power for maintaining its operations. The project also envisages dedicated power infrastructure, including facilitation for two incoming feeders from independent sources to the data centre park substation, a critical provision given the high energy demands of modern data centre facilities.

ReNew described the proposed investment as an important step in its data centre foray, with renewable energy integration forming a key part of the proposition. The company noted that the initiative aligns with Maharashtra's ambition to become a $1 trillion economy by 2030 and its focus on high-growth sectors such as data centres, semiconductors and clean energy.

The announcement comes as India's data centre market continues to attract substantial investment, driven by surging demand for cloud computing, artificial intelligence workloads and digital services. Maharashtra has emerged as a preferred destination for such projects, leveraging its industrial infrastructure, skilled workforce and policy support. ReNew's existing footprint in the state includes a portfolio of 2.5 gigawatts of power capacity, comprising 1.3 GW of commissioned and 376 MW of under-construction wind capacity, along with 450 MW of commissioned and 273 MW of under-construction solar capacity. The company has invested approximately ₹15,000 crore in Maharashtra to date.

The integration of renewable energy into data centre operations is increasingly viewed as a critical component of sustainable digital infrastructure development. By mandating a majority share of green power, the proposed park could serve as a model for future projects seeking to balance the energy-intensive nature of data centres with environmental commitments. For ReNew, the venture represents a strategic diversification beyond its core renewable energy business, positioning the company to capture value from India's rapidly expanding digital economy.
