NYAB Finland Oy has signed an agreement to carry out the first stage of early works for a planned data centre campus in Utajärvi, Finland, marking a concrete step forward in a large-scale digital infrastructure development that could ultimately deliver 200 MW of capacity.

The campus is being developed through Data Tank Nordic Oy, the project company of AMP Tank AG. Under the contract, NYAB will undertake site preparation and infrastructure works required for the development of the campus, with options to expand the scope of the early works. The financial value of the contract was not disclosed. Work is set to commence immediately.

The early works represent the initial phase of the planned campus development. If implemented in full, the campus would comprise four data halls with a combined capacity of 200 MW, along with associated infrastructure. NYAB's involvement in the broader implementation of the project remains under negotiation and would be subject to separate agreements.

"The data centre project in Utajärvi is well suited to NYAB's experience and expertise in infrastructure, energy and industrial construction. We have been involved in the project from an early stage and look forward to continuing our cooperation on the project," said Petri Kotkansalo, CEO of NYAB Finland.

The project is also seen as a significant economic development opportunity for the local municipality. "This large-scale data centre project is of great importance to the Municipality of Utajärvi. The commencement of the works marks another concrete step in the development of the data centre campus. The Municipality of Utajärvi will continue its close cooperation with the parties involved in the project and support the continued development," said Anne Sormunen, Mayor of Utajärvi.

The development reflects the broader trend of data centre investment spreading across the Nordic region, where abundant renewable energy resources, cool climates and supportive regulatory environments have made countries such as Finland increasingly attractive for hyperscale and large-scale colocation projects. A 200 MW campus would rank among the larger data centre developments in the region, and the commencement of early works signals growing momentum behind the Utajärvi project.
