Japanese IT services provider NTT Data has disclosed more than half a billion dollars in data center capital expenditure for the first quarter of its fiscal year 2026, underscoring the company's aggressive expansion in the sector as enterprise demand for AI-ready infrastructure continues to climb.
In its Q1 FY2026 financial report, NTT Data recorded data center investment of $634 million for the April-to-June period, while sales from its data center business reached $733 million, generating an operating margin of 33 percent. The figures highlight the profitability and strategic importance of NTT Data's data center operations within its broader portfolio.
The company, a subsidiary of the NTT Group, reported overall net sales of $8 billion for the quarter, up 15.8 percent year-over-year. Net new orders surged 29.7 percent to $9.15 billion, while operating profit rose 9 percent to $398 million, translating to an overall operating margin of five percent.
Kazuhiko Nakayama, who recently assumed the role of president and CEO of NTT Data Group, framed the results within a larger economic transformation underway in Japan. "Japan is in the midst of the most consequential economic transition in a generation," he said. "The corporate landscape is being reshaped by consolidation, renewed investment, and a fundamental shift in pricing models. For a company of our scale, this shift changes the calculus on everything from capital allocation to how we price our services and where we choose to invest for growth."
Nakayama also addressed the complexities of the global operating environment, citing US policy uncertainty, European regulatory challenges, and the accelerating push toward AI adoption among enterprise clients. Despite these headwinds, he said the results demonstrate sustained and healthy customer demand to "modernize operations, accelerate transformation, and enter the next phase of AI adoption." He added that the company remains confident in executing its long-term growth strategy and scaling its AI services portfolio.
NTT Data currently operates more than 2GW of capacity across 160 data centers in 20 markets worldwide, spanning the US, EMEA, and APAC regions. The company's continued investment in data center infrastructure reflects a broader industry trend in which hyperscale and enterprise demand for AI workloads is driving record capital deployment in digital infrastructure.
