Meta Expands Louisiana Data Center Campus to 5GW with $50 Billion Investment

By: IDCNOVARegion: North America
Meta has announced a major expansion of its data center campus in Richland Parish, Louisiana, more than doubling its planned capacity to 5 gigawatts. The project, known as Hyperion, was initially a 2GW development and now represents one of the largest planned data center campuses in the world, with total investment expected to reach $50 billion.

The company first unveiled plans for the 4 million square foot campus in late 2024, originally set on 2,250 acres. At the end of 2025, Meta quietly purchased an additional 1,400 acres of adjacent land, paving the way for the expansion. The Hyperion campus was initially designed to include nine buildings, with each coming online in phases through 2030. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg had previously suggested the project could eventually reach 5GW, and these plans now appear to be confirmed.

In addition to the core data center investment, Meta has pledged $1 billion for local infrastructure improvements, including roads, water, and wastewater systems. The company also plans to partner with Entergy to fund seven new natural gas-fueled generating plants, three grid-scale batteries, nuclear uprates, and other purchased power in Louisiana. Meta claims this energy strategy will save local customers approximately $2 billion over 20 years.

“This commitment from Meta puts Louisiana at the center of America’s future in artificial intelligence, positioning our nation to compete and lead globally,” said Jeff Landry, Governor of Louisiana. “In just two years, we’ve secured more than $150 billion in new investment by creating an environment where companies can move quickly and build at scale. Projects like this don’t just grow our state’s economy, they ensure America continues to lead in the technologies that will define the next generation.”

Rachel Peterson, Vice President of Data Centers at Meta, added: “From the beginning, this project has always been about more than building infrastructure — it’s about building alongside the community. The people, workforce and partnership we’ve found in Louisiana have enabled this project to be a cornerstone of our global infrastructure. With more than $1.6 billion already contracted with local companies and thousands of jobs being supported, we’re delivering real economic impact alongside the AI infrastructure that will power the future.”

Once operational, the campus is expected to support around 1,000 local jobs. While Louisiana is not a major data center hub, the Richland Parish site—located in the North Louisiana Delta Country—is set to become a cornerstone of Meta’s global infrastructure. The expansion reflects Meta’s broader ambition to scale its compute capacity dramatically. In January, the company established Meta Compute, a division focused on building tens of gigawatts of compute this decade, with plans for “hundreds of gigawatts or more over time,” according to Zuckerberg.

The announcement also comes amid Meta’s push into cloud services, leveraging its vast fleet of GPUs and data center capacity. Earlier this month, the company revealed plans for a $9.17 billion data center campus in Alberta, Canada, signaling a continued global build-out.
