Hillhouse-Backed TeraNova DC Appoints Sanjay Bhutani as CEO, Plans Up to $12 Billion India Data Center Investment

By: IDCNOVARegion: South Asia
TeraNova DC, a data center platform backed by Hillhouse Investment, has appointed Sanjay Bhutani as its chief executive officer, signaling the company's intent to accelerate its ambitious buildout of hyperscale and AI-ready data center infrastructure across India.

Bhutani brings nearly three decades of experience spanning IT, telecommunications, and digital infrastructure. He has previously led data center strategies for multinational organizations, contributed to the development of some of Asia's largest data centers and internet exchanges, and played a leading role in the formation and growth of AdaniConneX, the joint venture between Adani Enterprises and EdgeConneX. His appointment positions TeraNova DC to leverage deep industry expertise as it pursues one of the most aggressive data center expansion plans in the region.

The company plans to invest approximately $12 billion to $15 billion and develop over 2 GW of capacity across key Indian markets, including Maharashtra, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Delhi NCR, and Gujarat, by 2032. The platform is focused on developing and operating hyperscale, AI-ready, and sustainable data center campuses, reflecting the growing demand for compute-intensive infrastructure driven by cloud adoption and the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence workloads.

Bhutani said, "India's digitisation vision is entering a defining phase. As hyperscalers, enterprises and a new generation of AI start-ups scale their ambitions, the country will require gigawatt-scale data centre campuses that provide compute-ready infrastructure and deployment certainty."

TeraNova DC said its development strategy will center on strategically located land banks, power-ready sites, and scalable campus infrastructure. The company plans to build gigawatt-scale campuses designed for hyperscale cloud, enterprise, and high-density AI workloads, with the flexibility to expand as customer requirements evolve. To improve quality, consistency, and deployment timelines, the company will employ Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA) methodologies, modular construction techniques, and prefabricated power and cooling systems.

The appointment and investment plans underscore the intensifying competition in India's data center market, where global investors and domestic operators are racing to secure land, power, and connectivity to serve hyperscale cloud providers and AI-driven enterprises. India's data center capacity is expected to grow substantially over the coming decade, with the country emerging as one of the most dynamic digital infrastructure markets in the Asia-Pacific region.
