US water treatment firm Gradiant has signed a deal with an unnamed hyperscaler to deploy its HyperSolved end-to-end water and wastewater treatment platform at a data center currently under development in West Texas. The project marks one of the company's most significant deployments in a water-scarce region, underscoring the growing pressure on data center operators to secure sustainable water supplies as they expand into arid markets.
HyperSolved, Gradiant's flagship platform for hyperscale AI data centers, manages the full cooling water lifecycle — from sourcing to discharge — under a single integrated system. The platform draws on non-freshwater sources, including municipal effluent and groundwater, and applies high-recovery concentration technology to minimize liquid discharge and reduce disposal costs. An AI-driven monitoring layer, SmartOps, tracks and optimizes water systems in real time to safeguard cooling performance and reliability, a critical requirement for high-density AI computing environments.
The West Texas project will see Gradiant engineer the site's complete water and wastewater system with a goal of zero discharge to surface water, according to the company. Nish Vora, managing director for the Americas at Gradiant, noted the project's demanding timeline and tough water constraints. "This project puts Gradiant's data center track record to work in one of the tightest schedules and toughest water constraints we've seen, backed by the presence we've already built in Texas," Vora said. "We're delivering the site's full water and wastewater system engineered for zero discharge to surface water, on a construction schedule that leaves no room for delay."
The announcement comes as data center operators increasingly target regions with limited water availability, driven by land, power, and proximity to demand centers. Gradiant CEO Prakash Govindan highlighted the strategic importance of the deployment. "Water-scarce regions are where the next wave of hyperscale growth is happening, and most operators don't have a way to get there," Govindan said. "We're giving them one. This project shows hyperscalers can build in these markets without water becoming the reason they can't."
Gradiant expects data centers to account for roughly 25 percent of its global business by 2027, with HyperSolved now available across North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. The company has been expanding its data center footprint steadily: in April, it was awarded a contract to design and deliver a water treatment facility for a planned hyperscale data center in Didcot, South Oxfordshire, UK, located on the site of a former coal power station. In May, Gradiant said it had deployed HyperSolved across several large-scale hyperscale data centers, and the company closed its Series E funding round at a $2 billion valuation.
Industry analysts note that water treatment and reuse technologies are becoming a competitive differentiator for data center developers, particularly in drought-prone regions like West Texas, where municipal water supplies are increasingly strained. Gradiant's zero-discharge approach could offer a blueprint for other operators seeking to mitigate environmental impact and regulatory risk while maintaining operational uptime.
