Papua New Guinea has taken a significant step toward digital sovereignty with the launch of its first AI-ready data center and sovereign cloud platform, developed by local ICT provider Datec PNG in partnership with state-owned telecommunications company Telikom PNG. The new facility, named Kumul Cloud Infinity, is designed to host cloud computing and artificial intelligence workloads within the country's borders, addressing a long-standing reliance on offshore data storage.
The launch marks a pivotal moment for the Pacific island nation, where historically nearly all digital data has been managed and stored abroad. Speaking at the launch event, Datec chairman Moses Maladina confirmed that the facility is equipped with Nvidia H200 GPUs, enabling advanced AI processing capabilities. However, the company has not disclosed the number of GPUs deployed or the facility's total IT capacity and physical size. DCD has reached out to Datec for further details.
"We now have the capability here in PNG to run AI workloads, analyze large amounts of information, and support sophisticated AI applications, while at the same time providing cloud computing and data storage services required by Government, state-owned enterprises, and private businesses," Maladina said.
The strategic importance of the project extends beyond infrastructure. Telikom Group CEO Amos Tepi highlighted the sovereignty implications in a LinkedIn post, noting that since digital technology arrived in PNG, almost 100 percent of the country's data has been managed and stored overseas. "For Government agencies, banks, hospitals, universities, businesses and citizens, this raised questions about location, governing laws, access and restoration during disruptions, and national control over strategically valuable data," he wrote. "Kumul Cloud Infinity provides a credible national response. Hosting systems and data within PNG's jurisdiction advances data residency and gives organizations greater control, confidence and visibility while supporting national resilience and innovation."
According to DataCenterMap, Papua New Guinea currently hosts only two data centers, both operated by PNG DataCo. The new Kumul Cloud Infinity facility significantly expands the country's digital infrastructure landscape. Datec is already planning a second data center in Lae, the nation's second-largest city, to provide geographic redundancy and ensure business continuity, although no timeline has been announced for that project.
The development reflects a broader regional trend toward sovereign cloud infrastructure. In neighboring Australia, AI infrastructure company SCX.ai has partnered with DataDirect Networks (DDN) to build a sovereign AI inferencing cloud, combining SCX's ASIC-based infrastructure with DDN's Infinia data intelligence platform. The service, aimed at Australian enterprises, government agencies, and research institutions, will keep inferencing workloads within the country's borders. SCX has already deployed a sovereign AI node using SambaNova processors at Equinix's SY5 data center in Sydney, with a second node targeted for operation by the end of 2026. SCX recently went public on the Australian Securities Exchange, raising AU$40 million (US$28.73 million) in its IPO.
Similar initiatives are emerging across the region. In India, CoEdge and Datenfarmen Center are partnering to deliver AI-ready cloud infrastructure nationwide, with Datenfarmen providing data centers and CoEdge offering cloud platforms, GPUs, CPUs, and AI inferencing services. Separately, Kochi-based Saints & Masters has launched Onam Cloud, a platform leveraging Equinix's global network to connect enterprises to Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services, and Google Cloud without traversing the public internet. Additionally, 3verest, a sovereign healthcare cloud provider with deployments across Australia, the UK, Germany, the US, Canada, and the EU, is using Equinix's Fabric Geo Zones to build sovereign AI infrastructure for healthcare organizations, enabling AI adoption while keeping data and prompts within the correct jurisdiction.
These developments underscore a growing global emphasis on data residency and digital sovereignty, particularly for nations that have historically relied on offshore infrastructure. As AI workloads become more data-intensive and strategically sensitive, the ability to process and store information within national borders is emerging as a critical component of economic resilience and technological independence.
